There
are many advantages associated with membership in the University
Honors Program. Consider just a few of the benefits:
Graduation with University Honors Students who
fulfill program requirements graduate with University Honors. This designation is reflected on
your diploma and transcript.
Classes University Honors Program students satisfy
many of their General Education requirements in classes of twenty or
fewer students, restricted to Honors only. Many of these sections
are taught by award-winning faculty members.
Priority Registration Active members of the
University Honors Program may be eligible to register for classes
each semester at the beginning of the Regular Registration period.
Registration on the earliest possible day provides the Honors
student an opportunity to have the best selection of
classes.
Scholarship Service Hour Requirement Many scholarships at
The University of Memphis require a service obligation to the
institution of 75 hours per semester. Because honors courses require
significant enrichment activities by the student over and above
normal course requirements, scholarship service hours are waived for
students who are either enrolled in an honors class, contracting for
honors credit, or otherwise completing the requirements for an
Honors Experience. Fulfillment of scholarship service hours by
participating in the Honors Program is considered on a
semester-by-semester basis.
Honors Housing Honors students may choose to live
in Honors-designated floors in Richardson Towers, which allows
honors students to share learning and living experiences.
Social and Cultural Activities The Honors Student
Council and the Resident Scholar Assistants organize many social
events. These events include distinguished lectures, cultural
activities such as visits to museums and concerts, and social events
such as movie night and parties to mark various
occasions.
Research Opportunities The Honors Program supports
undergraduate research in the following ways:
- Honors students are eligible to apply for funds to help pay
for expenses related to research projects.
- The
University Honors Program provides travel funds for students to
present their research at the National Conference for
Undergraduate Research, the largest conference for undergraduate
researchers.
- The
University Honors Program sponsors two on-campus research forums,
the Works In Progress Symposium in the fall semester and the
Student Research Forum in the spring semester.
Exchange Opportunities The Honors Program supports
student exchange programs in the following ways:
- The National Student Exchange program, in
which you can spend up to one year attending college in another
state and pay in-state tuition. You can use this opportunity to
experience life in a different part of the country, participate in
different programs, or investigate graduate and professional
schools.
- The University of Memphis Study Abroad
Program, in which you
could spend a summer, a semester or an academic year immersing
yourself in one of over 200 exciting academic cultures.
Special Privileges Honors students have access to
the Honors computer labs and student lounge located in Scates
